Outerwear rewards buyers who plan against the factory calendar, not the retail one. Coat lines fill up by late spring for autumn delivery, and the gap between a confirmed June slot and a hopeful August enquiry is often a full selling season. Component sourcing runs on the same clock: branded zippers, waterproof shells and insulation each carry supplier lead times the factory must chain together.
The trenches, puffers and vests listed here show shell fabric and fill details up front. Because jackets cube out a container faster than any other garment, ask your quoting factory about compression packing — it routinely trims the freight bill on padded styles.
Almost every disappointment in this category traces back to a single misunderstanding: outerwear is not one trade. A padded jacket and a tailored wool coat are made by different factories, on different machines, by operators with different skills, on different seasonal clocks. Buying wholesale outerwear from Turkey works well when you know which of the two you are talking to, and badly when you assume a single supplier covers both.
The padded side — puffers, parkas, gilets, quilted liners — runs on lightweight woven shells, filling machines and quilting lines. It clusters around Istanbul's Bağcılar and Güngören districts and increasingly around Çorlu. The tailored side — wool coats, trench coats, blazer-weight overcoats — is a cut-and-press trade that shares equipment and personnel with formalwear, and it is concentrated where suiting has always been made. Fusing presses, pad stitching, shoulder shaping and steam finishing are the tells.
There is a third, smaller group doing technical shells: seam-sealed jackets with taped seams, laminated membranes and welded pockets. That equipment is expensive, so there are perhaps a few dozen credible workshops nationally. If your product needs a taped seam, ask to see the tape machine before you talk price. It is the fastest way to sort a real technical maker from a sewing room subcontracting the hard part.
Two numbers describe a down jacket and buyers routinely confuse them. Fill power measures the loft of the down — how many cubic inches one ounce occupies — and it is a quality measure, typically 550 to 800 for commercial product. Fill weight is how many grams went into the garment, and it is a warmth measure. A 700 fill-power jacket with 80 g of down is a light autumn piece; the same down at 250 g is a winter parka. Specify both, always, and specify fill weight per size or you will get one weight graded across the run.
Down is sold as a duck or goose blend with a stated ratio, usually written as down/feather — 90/10 is premium, 80/20 is the commercial standard, and anything below 70/30 is closer to feather than down and will feel it within a season. Ask which laboratory standard the mill certifies against; IDFB testing is the common reference, and a supplier who cannot name one is quoting from a bag with no paperwork behind it.
Synthetic insulation has closed much of the performance gap and removes two problems at once: it insulates when damp, and it takes the animal-welfare question off the table. It comes as sheet wadding measured in grams per square metre — 60, 100, 150 gsm being the usual ladder — or as a loose fill blown like down. Sheet wadding is easier to quality-control because you can see it, and for most commercial price points it is the sensible default. Reserve down for the top of the range where the compressibility genuinely sells the garment.
The shell decides how the jacket behaves in rain, how it sounds when you move, and whether the filling stays inside. Downproof construction matters more than most buyers expect: down migrates through any fabric with a loose enough weave, so down jackets need a tightly woven shell — usually a fine polyamide taffeta with a calendered or coated back — while synthetic wadding tolerates a much wider range.
Water resistance is described by two numbers that a lot of suppliers quote loosely. The hydrostatic head, in millimetres, is how tall a column of water the fabric holds before leaking; 1,500 mm handles light rain, 5,000 mm handles sustained rain, above 10,000 mm is genuine outdoor territory. Breathability, in grams of vapour per square metre per 24 hours, is what stops the wearer soaking the jacket from the inside. Neither number means anything if the seams are only sewn — thread makes holes. A jacket that claims waterproof without taped seams is water-resistant at best, and describing it otherwise is a returns problem waiting to happen.
There is one regulatory change worth planning around rather than discovering. Durable water repellent finishes historically relied on fluorochemicals, and European restrictions on PFAS have been tightening steadily. Turkish mills have been moving to fluorine-free DWR, which repels rain well but wets out sooner under heavy abrasion. Ask specifically for a PFAS-free finish, get it written on the fabric confirmation, and set customer expectations accordingly rather than promising performance the chemistry no longer delivers.
Quilting method is the first fork. Sewn-through quilting stitches the shell to the lining, which is simple and cheap but creates a cold line at every stitch. Box-baffle construction builds fabric walls between the layers so the filling keeps its loft all the way to the seam. Baffles cost meaningfully more in both material and labour, and they are the difference between a jacket that performs at minus five and one that merely looks like it does.
Hardware is where a supplier can quietly claw back margin. A branded zip from a global maker costs several times a local equivalent, and on a coat with a long centre-front opening that gap is visible in the quote. The failure mode is not subtle either — a jammed main zip makes the garment unusable, so this is the one component worth paying for. Specify the brand and the tooth size, and specify a reverse-coil zip if you want the clean look.
Then the small things that generate complaints: a storm flap behind the zip, a chin guard so the slider does not meet the wearer's face, an inner cuff to stop draughts, a two-way zip on anything long enough to sit down in, and a hanging loop strong enough to actually hang a wet coat. None of these adds much cost at the quotation stage. All of them are expensive to add after the first production run.
Outerwear carries the highest minimums of any apparel category, and the reason is mechanical rather than commercial. A quilting line has a long setup, filling machines need calibration per fill weight, and pressing a wool coat ties up equipment for far longer than pressing a shirt. Expect 200 to 300 pieces per colour on padded jackets, often 150 upward on tailored coats, with technical shells higher still because the taping machine has to be threaded and tested for each fabric.
The seasonal calendar is unforgiving in a way that catches first-time buyers every year. Wool and technical fabrics are ordered from mills in spring for autumn delivery. A factory approached in July for October delivery is not quoting from stock — it is quoting whatever cloth remains unsold, in whatever colours nobody wanted, at whatever price scarcity supports. Confirmed orders in March and April get the loom time, the colour range and the price. Everything after June is a negotiation from a weak position.
One more structural fact: outerwear is bulky, so it is almost always charged on volumetric rather than actual weight. A carton of puffers weighs little and occupies a lot. Before you compare two unit prices, run both through freight on cubic metres — the cheaper jacket in a bulkier carton frequently arrives more expensive.
Approve in three separate steps and never merge them. First the fabric: a physical swatch of the shell and the lining, with the mill's test report for water column and the composition label. Second the fit: a sewn sample in your middle size, with the correct insulation weight inside, tried on a person rather than a stand — padded garments change dramatically once filled, and a coat that measures correctly flat can still bind across the back.
Third, and most often skipped, an insulation verification. Ask the factory to weigh the filling for one garment in front of you, or on a short video call. Fill weight is invisible after closing, it is the single easiest place to shave cost, and the customer only discovers the shortfall in the first cold week — long after your return window has opened.
Add two checks at goods-in that cost nothing. Hang three jackets from each colour for a week and look for down leakage at the seams. Then run every main zip twenty times. Those two tests catch the overwhelming majority of the complaints this category generates.
